Surrounded by the world of technology, when it comes to security, everyone agrees that there are more reasons to be cautious than to remedy. In the corporate environment, caution becomes even more mandatory because it protects all the work resources that ensure the continuity of good service provided by organizations. Imagine losing all customer and supplier data, contract files, and sales records! That would certainly be a huge loss for the company. Technical setbacks, human errors, and natural disasters can happen to anyone and can destroy a company if it is not prepared. To help your business, we have prepared an article on corporate data backups, the reasons for doing them, the types currently in use, how to choose, as well as bringing up questions that can help you offer a better level of service to your client. Check it out with us!

Importance and Objectives of Backup for Companies

As we saw at the beginning, performing backups is essential for protecting information. With the amount of data that companies of any segment and size work with every day, making complete copies of their records has become an information security strategy. Alongside the risk of information loss due to system failures are also cyberattacks. An increasingly frequent form that becomes more serious when the company does not have a professional backup. Those primarily responsible for IT management often fail to accurately calculate the importance of backups because they are constantly focused on the organization's core business. For these reasons, an organization may have to bear serious losses if it does not prioritize data security policies and strategies and backups.

Main Types of Backup

We list below the main types of backup, so that the IT manager can implement strategies with a solid understanding of the concepts efficiently. Check out each one:
  1. Full backup
This type of backup, as the name itself says, is where a copy of all files is made to another storage location, whether local, virtual, or in the cloud. Also known as a normal backup, as it copies, stores, and updates all items selected by the person responsible for the operation. Typically, it is the first backup to which the systems are subjected. And its main advantage is that the company can rely on faithful and complete reproduction copies of all its data, making a perfect and agile recovery possible. There is a need for more storage space and a longer time to complete, due to the large volume of data, which is affected by the hardware capacity and the connection to which it is inserted.
  1. Incremental backup
The incremental backup is triggered after a full backup and copies only the files created or modified since the last normal or incremental backup. Thus, a smaller amount of data is copied to the chosen location, requiring less storage space than a full backup, for example. This backup is known to be more effective and agile due to ensuring better performance of the corporate system, and also with a reduced recovery time.
  1. Differential backup
The differential backup is very similar to the incremental backup, as it copies all data changed since the previous backup. However, the difference between them is that the differential stores only the files that were not in the system at the last update. In other words, it will always consider the last full backup, considering only the files that are different (which were not previously in the system). Thus, the storage capacity tends to be larger than the incremental, requiring more space. And a detail: to restore, you need the last differential backup and the last normal backup.
  1. Continuous incremental backup
The continuous incremental backup is a new type of backup, relatively more recent than the others, but it is already widely used by companies. It is similar to the incremental backup, but the difference lies in data availability. Thus, it allows for automation of the data recovery process that does not exist in the common incremental backup, so you do not need to check which databases need to be recovered. Unlike a common incremental backup, which requires the full backup and all subsequent ones to retrieve the desired information. A great alternative for achieving greater agility in backup and restoration, as well as saving storage space, especially in Cloud times. Based on the 3-2-1 rule, a concept popularized by Peter Krogh, companies should follow these steps to keep their data safe: (3) have three copies of your important data available, (2) keep them on two different types of media, (1) with one of the copies stored in a location external to your environment and secure. With that in mind, having one or two physical backups and one in the Cloud is an excellent way to cover these three premises and ensure that your data is maintained, regardless of the type of problem that may occur. Here is important information: there is no better type of backup than another, but rather the most suitable one for each need. Given this, an excellent option would be to hire a partner to provide a service that is fully focused, specialized, and prioritized on the core business to offer the best path to a company's success.
