The fourth edition of the Brazilian Digital Security Report from dfndr lab points to a still worrying scenario: over 120 million detections of cyber attacks via malicious links in the first six months of 2018, a number 95.9% higher than that recorded in the same period in 2017. Of these 120 million, 63.8 million were detected in the second quarter alone, an amount 12.2% higher than the 56.9 million in the first quarter. The numbers are alarming, as, compared to the total Brazilian population, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), it is projected that one in every three Brazilians may have been victims of cybercriminals just between the months of April, May, and June 2018. Added to this, our analysis shows that in the last quarter, eight malicious links were detected every second. There were over 28,000 detections per hour. Among the attacks detected in the second quarter, three categories continue to stand out: Phishing via messaging app (36.6 million detections); Suspicious advertising (12.2 million detections); and Fake news (4.4 million detections). However, these last two require special attention as they showed an increase of more than 50% between the first and second quarters, and their main attack objective remains illicit profit from views, access, and clicks. Another important highlight of the period was the confirmation of a trend we noticed in the last quarter of 2017: massive use of strategies to convince users to accept sending cell phone notifications. With this, cybercriminals have been building a base of people to whom they send scams directly through notifications, and afterward, they also convince victims to share and spread malicious links via messaging apps. dfndr lab has invested in proprietary technologies, based on artificial and human intelligence, to increase its ability to alert about fake news.
